Food Allergy Blood Test - More Information

This food allergy profile, also known as a food allergy blood test and a food allergy IgE test, measures the IgE antibody blood levels for 14 different foods.

This food allergy panel includes the almond IgE test, cashew IgE test, codfish IgE test, egg white IgE test, milk (cow) IgE test, peanut IgE test, salmon IgE test, scallop IgE test, sesame seed IgE test, shrimp IgE test, soybean IgE test, tuna IgE test, walnut IgE test and wheat IgE test. This food allergy profile test uses the ImmunoCAP® lab methodology. The food allergy panel IgE blood test results are reported in kU/L and can be compared against the food allergy profile IgE antibody reference range provided by the lab to determine the IgE allergy class to the foods tested.

This food allergy blood test is less painful and has less side effects than historical allergy testing methods such as the skin prick test (SPT). In the skin prick, or scratch, test, serum containing food components are injected into the skin. If you are allergic to one or more of the food components, you will, unfortunately, have a mild allergic reaction and all of the symptoms that go with it. Instead, this food allergy blood test can check for these food allergies without causing an allergic reaction, resulting in a much more comfortable lab testing experience through a simple blood draw.

Food allergy testing provides helpful information but, in some cases, may not identify a food allergy response when one is present. All results from these types of food allergy tests should be interpreted with one's medical provider before eating any specific food tested.
