Phosphate Blood Test - More Information

The phosphorus test, sometimes known as a phosphorus blood test, phosphate blood test or a phosphorus lab test, measures the phosphorus blood level.

Phosphorus plays very important roles in the body. Typically found in the form phosphate, phosphorus is used to make chemicals for energy (ATP), major portions of cell membranes, bone matrix and tooth enamel, and genetic material such as DNA and RNA. Low phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia) causes low energy production and issues with the nervous system. High phosphate levels can cause diarrhea and interfere with a variety of metabolic processes.

In many cases, the phosphorus test is performed at the same time as a calcium test for a more thorough evaluation. Low phosphorus and calcium levels are correlated with low vitamin D levels, specific kidney issues and poor absorption. High phosphorus levels and low calcium levels suggest a kidney problem or hypoparathyroidism. Conversely, low phosphorus levels with high calcium levels is typically seen in hyperparathyroidism or sarcoidosis. High phosphorus and calcium levels are typically seen when someone has toxic vitamin D levels and milk-alkali syndrome which is why this phosphate lab test is frequently done along with the vitamin D test.

Getting a phosphorus blood test near you is a relatively simple process. After ordering online, simply go to your selected Quest Diagnostics lab location and get your blood drawn. Once the phosphorus test lab report is ready, it will be available for download. As can be seen on the sample phosphorus lab report, phosphorus blood levels are reported as a number and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
