The total PSA test, also known as a total prostate-specific antigen lab test, PSA blood test, total PSA level test and total PSA lab test, measures the total PSA blood level.
Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by the special cells in the prostate gland in men. Also known as gamma-seminoprotein and kallikrein-3 (KLK3), PSA acts as an enzyme and enables sperm to swim without restriction by causing liquefaction of the semen. Most men have small amounts of PSA in their prostate glands. Despite its name, prostate-specific antigen is not a true antigen. PSA has also been found in small amounts in women and the clinical significance of PSA blood levels is not well understood. This particular PSA test measures the total PSA level which represents the amount of prostate-specific antigen that is both bound and unbound in the blood. For a more detailed look at how much of the PSA is bioavailable, or free, in the blood, check out the free & total PSA test.
High PSA levels have been associated with prostate cancer, prostate inflammation (prostatitis) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Historically, PSA lab testing was routinely done as a way to screen for prostate cancer with lab testing. Abnormal PSA blood levels sometimes lead to a prostate biopsy to confirm that no cancer exists. PSA testing is also performed as part of ongoing monitoring in men who have had prostate cancer previously and rising levels are often considered concerning.
To get a total PSA test near you, simply order online and get tested at your selected Quest Diagnostics lab. After your blood is drawn, you will be notified when your PSA lab report is available electronically. As can be seen on the PSA sample lab report above, the total PSA test result is reported as a number and can be compared against the reference range provided by the lab.
Fasting is not required for the total PSA lab test. However, fasting will be necessary if other lab tests are being performed at the same time that require fasting.
